How to Set Floor and Origin in Blender Tracking
Aligning a 3D scene with live-action footage in Blender requires establishing a real-world coordinate system after solving your camera motion. This guide walks you through the exact steps to define the scene's world origin, establish a flat ground plane, and set proper orientation using tracking markers in Blender’s Motion Tracking workspace.
1. Solve the Camera Motion
Before defining orientation, ensure your footage has been tracked and solved:
- Open the Motion Tracking workspace and load your footage.
- Track at least eight continuous features across the clip.
- In the Solve panel on the left sidebar (press
Tif hidden), click Solve Camera Motion. Ensure your solve error is as low as possible (ideally under 1.0 px).
2. Set the Scene Origin
The origin defines the (0, 0, 0) world center coordinate
where your 3D assets will initially spawn:
- In the Movie Clip Editor, select a single tracked marker on the ground that you want to serve as the center of your 3D world.
- Navigate to the Solve tab in the sidebar.
- Scroll down to the Orientation sub-panel.
- Click the Set Origin button.
3. Set the Ground Floor
Setting the floor ensures that the 3D grid matches the physical surface in your video:
- Select exactly three tracked markers that rest on the same flat surface (such as the ground, a table, or a road).
- Ensure the markers form a triangle and are not in a straight line.
- In the Orientation sub-panel, click the Set Floor button.
4. Align the Axes and Set Scale
To ensure objects align with the perspective and real-world dimensions of your footage:
- Set an Axis: Select two markers that lie along a straight edge in your scene (such as a sidewalk edge or wall base), then click Set X Axis or Set Y Axis in the Orientation panel.
- Set Scale: Select two markers with a known physical distance between them. In the Orientation panel, enter the measured real-world distance into the Distance field, then click Set Scale.
5. Finalize the 3D Scene
To see the results in your 3D Viewport:
- Under the Scene Setup panel in the Movie Clip Editor sidebar, click Setup Tracking Scene.
- Switch your 3D Viewport to the Camera View
(
Numpad 0).
Your 3D camera will now move in sync with the footage, with the 3D cursor at your selected origin point and the grid plane perfectly aligned with your physical floor.
