How to Set Camera Background Image in Blender
Setting a background image in Blender's camera view allows 3D artists to align models, match camera perspectives, and accurately reference 2D artwork during modeling or animation. This step-by-step guide walks you through enabling background images in your camera properties and configuring their settings for optimal alignment.
Step 1: Select Your Camera
Click on your camera in the 3D Viewport or select it from the Outliner in the top-right corner of the screen.
Step 2: Switch to Camera View
Press Numpad 0 on your keyboard, or click the camera
icon on the right side of the 3D Viewport, to look directly through the
camera lens.
Step 3: Access Object Data Properties
In the bottom-right panel system, click the green camera icon tab labeled Object Data Properties.
Step 4: Enable Background Images
Scroll down the panel until you locate the Background Images section. Check the checkbox next to "Background Images" to enable the feature, then click the small arrow next to it to expand the menu.
Step 5: Load Your Image
- Click the Add Image button.
- Expand the newly created image panel and click Open.
- File navigate to your desired reference image, select it, and click Open Image.
Step 6: Adjust the Image Settings
Once loaded, you can customize how the background image displays in your camera view:
- Opacity: Drag the slider to make the image transparent or solid.
- Depth: Choose Back to render the image behind 3D objects, or Front to overlay it on top of your geometry.
- Frame Method: Select Fit, Crop, or Stretch to match how the image scales relative to your render resolution.
- Offset (X/Y): Adjust these values to reposition the image horizontally or vertically.
- Rotation and Scale: Rotate the image or change its size to match your scene setup.
