How to Set a Camera Focus Target in Blender

Setting a focus target for a camera in Blender allows you to create realistic depth of field effects by keeping a specific object sharply in focus while blurring the foreground and background. This guide covers how to enable Depth of Field, select an object or empty as your focal point, and fine-tune your blur settings using the camera properties panel.

Step-by-Step Guide to Setting a Focus Target

1. Select the Camera

In the 3D Viewport or the Outliner, click on your camera to select it.

2. Open the Camera Properties

Navigate to the Properties Panel on the right side of the screen and click on the Object Data Properties tab (represented by a green camera icon).

3. Enable Depth of Field

  1. Locate the Depth of Field section.
  2. Check the box next to Depth of Field to enable the feature.
  3. Click the dropdown arrow to expand the settings.

4. Assign the Focus Object

  1. Look for the Focus on Object field.
  2. Click the eyedropper tool next to the input box and click directly on the object you want in focus within the 3D Viewport.
  3. Alternatively, click the empty text box and select the target object from the dropdown list.

Once set, the camera will dynamically maintain focus on that object even if the object or camera moves.

Fine-Tuning the Focus Effect

To adjust the strength and appearance of the background blur:

  • Aperture / F-Stop: Located under the Depth of Field settings. Lower values (e.g., f/1.4 or f/2.8) create a shallow depth of field with heavy background blur. Higher values (e.g., f/8.0 or f/16.0) keep more of the scene in focus.
  • Blades: Adjust this value to simulate the physical aperture blades of a real camera lens, changing the shape of the bokeh (blurred highlights).

Best Practice: Using an Empty as a Focus Target

If you want to focus on a specific part of a complex mesh or an empty area in 3D space:

  1. Press Shift + A in the 3D Viewport.
  2. Go to Empty > Plain Axes.
  3. Move the Empty to the exact point where you want the focus to be.
  4. Select your camera and set the Focus on Object target to this Empty.

This provides complete control over your focus point during animations through simple keyframing of the Empty's location.
