How to Save and Apply Pose Presets in Blender

Saving and applying pose presets in Blender streamlines character animation and ensures consistency across keyframes. Using Blender’s modern Asset Browser workflow, you can store hand gestures, facial expressions, and full-body poses directly into a reusable library. This guide covers how to prepare your character rig, create and save pose assets, apply and blend poses onto your rig, and manage your preset library efficiently.

1. Set Up the Asset Browser

Blender uses the Asset Browser to manage the Pose Library.

  1. Open a new area in your workspace and set the editor type to Asset Browser.
  2. Set the catalog dropdown in the Asset Browser header to Current File (or your designated Pose Library file).
  3. Open the N-Panel (Sidebar) in the 3D Viewport and navigate to the Animations tab to access the Pose Library shelf for quick access.

2. Save a New Pose Preset

To create a pose asset, you must be working with an armature in Pose Mode.

  1. Select your character's armature and switch from Object Mode to Pose Mode (Ctrl + Tab).
  2. Pose the character's bones as desired.
  3. Select the specific bones you want to include in the preset (press A to select all bones for a full-body pose, or select specific bones like fingers for a hand pose).
  4. In the Asset Browser editor, click Create Pose Asset. Alternatively, in the 3D Viewport Pose Library panel, click Create Pose Asset.
  5. Blender will generate an action asset containing the keyframe data and an automatic thumbnail of your 3D Viewport.

3. Apply Saved Poses to a Character

Once poses are stored, you can apply them instantly or blend them interactively.

  1. In Pose Mode, select the bones you want the pose to affect.
  2. Open the Asset Browser or the Pose Library panel in the Sidebar.
  3. Direct Apply: Click on the pose thumbnail to apply the pose at 100% strength.
  4. Interactive Blending: Click and drag left or right on the pose thumbnail in the Asset Browser, or click Blend Pose in the Viewport shelf. Move your mouse to interactively blend between the character's current pose and the preset pose. Press Enter or Left-Click to confirm, or Right-Click to cancel.

4. Advanced Pose Options

  • Flip Pose: To apply a mirrored version of a pose (such as applying a left-hand pose to the right hand), hold Ctrl while clicking or dragging the pose asset, or select Paste X-Flipped Pose.
  • Update Thumbnails: If you want a clearer preview, position your 3D Viewport camera, hover over the asset in the Asset Browser, open the Sidebar (N), and use the Generate Preview button or load a custom image.
  • Make Assets Permanent: To use your poses across different project files, move the .blend file containing your saved pose assets into a folder registered under Edit > Preferences > File Paths > Asset Libraries.
