How to Roll a Bone Along Its Y Axis in Blender
Adjusting a bone's roll along its local Y-axis in Blender controls the orientation of its X and Z axes, which is essential for proper rigging, bone constraints, and realistic animation. This guide covers how to quickly change bone roll using keyboard shortcuts, precise numerical inputs, and automated recalculation tools in Edit Mode.
Method 1: Use the Keyboard Shortcut (Interactive)
- Select your armature and press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
- Left-click to select the bone you want to roll.
- Press Ctrl + R on your keyboard.
- Move your mouse around the bone to rotate it along its Y-axis.
- Left-click or press Enter to confirm the rotation (or right-click/press Esc to cancel).
Tip: Hold Shift while moving the mouse for precise, slow adjustments, or hold Ctrl to snap the rotation to fixed increments.
Method 2: Enter an Exact Numerical Roll Value
- Select the bone in Edit Mode.
- Press N to open the Sidebar panel on the right side of the 3D Viewport if it is not already visible.
- Select the Item tab at the top of the Sidebar.
- Locate the Roll field under the Transform section.
- Click the field and enter your desired angle in degrees (for
example,
0°,90°, or-180°), then press Enter.
Alternatively, you can adjust this same value in the Bone Properties tab (green bone icon) in the Properties Editor.
Method 3: Automatically Recalculate Bone Roll
If you need to align the roll of multiple bones consistently:
- Select the bone or bones in Edit Mode.
- Press Shift + N to open the Recalculate Roll menu.
- Select an alignment axis from the list (such as Global X Axis, Global Z Axis, or View Axis). Blender will instantly align the bone's local axes relative to your selection.
