How to Remove Vertices from a Vertex Group in Blender
Removing vertices from a vertex group in Blender is an essential skill for managing mesh data, refining character rigging, and controlling modifier effects. This guide explains the step-by-step process to unassign specific vertices from any vertex group using Edit Mode and Weight Paint Mode, ensuring your 3D models remain organized and function correctly during animation.
Removing Vertices in Edit Mode
The most direct and precise way to remove vertices from a vertex group is using Edit Mode.
- Select your object in the 3D Viewport.
- Press Tab to switch to Edit Mode.
- Go to the Object Data Properties tab in the Properties panel (indicated by a green triangle icon).
- Expand the Vertex Groups section and select the vertex group you want to modify.
- In the 3D Viewport, select the specific vertices you want to remove.
- Click the Remove button located below the vertex group list.
To double-check your work, press Alt + A to deselect all vertices, select the group name, and click Select. The vertices you just removed will no longer be highlighted.
Removing Vertices in Weight Paint Mode
If you are working with character rigs or soft selection, you can remove vertex assignments graphically using Weight Paint Mode.
- Select your object and switch to Weight Paint Mode from the mode menu in the top-left corner.
- Select the target group in the Object Data Properties panel.
- Set the brush Weight to
0.000in the top toolbar. - Paint over the vertices you want to remove until they turn dark blue (indicating zero weight).
- Alternatively, change the brush blend mode to Subtract and paint over the area until all weight is removed.
Removing Vertices from All Groups Simultaneously
If you want to clear a selection of vertices from every existing vertex group at once:
- Switch to Edit Mode and select the desired vertices.
- Open the top header menu and go to Mesh > Vertex Groups > Remove from All Groups.
