How to Pack External Files and Textures in Blender

When sharing a Blender project, missing textures, fonts, and external assets often lead to missing pink shaders and broken materials. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on how to embed all external assets directly into a single .blend file. By packing your resources, you ensure that anyone opening your project on another system will see every texture, font, and sound effect exactly as intended.

How to Pack All Resources at Once

Packing all current project files into your .blend file takes only a few clicks:

  1. Open your project in Blender.
  2. Click on File in the top-left menu bar.
  3. Hover over External Data.
  4. Click Pack Resources (in some versions, this may appear as Pack All into .blend).
  5. Save your project by pressing Ctrl + S (Windows) or Cmd + S (Mac).

A notification will briefly appear at the bottom of the screen indicating how many external files were packed into the .blend file.

Enable Automatic Packing for Future Changes

If you are continuously adding new image textures or custom fonts and want them to pack automatically whenever you save:

  1. Go to File > External Data.
  2. Click Automatically Pack Resources to enable the checkmark.
  3. Save your file (Ctrl + S / Cmd + S).

From this point forward, any newly added external file will be embedded automatically upon saving.

How to Fix Missing Files Before Packing

If Blender cannot find an image texture on your drive, it cannot pack it. To resolve missing files before packing:

  1. Go to File > External Data > Report Missing Files to check the info log for missing paths.
  2. If files are missing, select File > External Data > Find Missing Files.
  3. Browse to the folder on your computer where the textures are located and click Find Missing Files.
  4. Once Blender locates and re-links the textures, proceed with packing the resources.

How to Unpack Resources

Packing assets increases the .blend file size. If you ever need to extract the embedded files back into regular folders:

  1. Go to File > External Data.
  2. Select Unpack Resources.
  3. Choose your preferred extraction method (e.g., Use files in current directory to create a textures folder next to your .blend file).
