How to Normalize Vertex Group Weights in Blender
Normalizing vertex group weights in Blender ensures that the sum of all weights assigned to a single vertex across multiple groups equals exactly 1.0 (100%). This process is essential for character rigging and mesh deformation, as it prevents undesirable stretching, clipping, or unnatural movement during animation. This article explains how to quickly normalize all vertex groups at once, clean up individual groups, and enable automatic normalization while weight painting.
Method 1: Normalize All Vertex Groups Simultaneously
To ensure every vertex across your entire mesh has a total combined weight of 1.0:
- Select your mesh in Object Mode.
- Switch to Weight Paint Mode using the mode selector
in the top-left corner (or press
Ctrl + Tab). - Click on the Weights menu in the top viewport header.
- Select Normalize All.
- Open the Adjust Last Operation panel in the
bottom-left corner of the viewport to customize settings:
- Lock Active: Enable this if you want to preserve the current values of the selected vertex group while adjusting the rest.
- Subset: Choose All Groups to adjust every vertex group assigned to the mesh.
Method 2: Normalize the Active Vertex Group Only
If you only want to adjust the currently selected vertex group relative to the others:
- Select your mesh and switch to Weight Paint Mode.
- In the Object Data Properties tab (green triangle icon) on the right panel, select the specific vertex group you want to modify.
- Click the Weights menu in the top viewport header.
- Select Normalize.
This recalculates the active group's weights so that the total weight per vertex across all assigned groups equals 1.0.
Method 3: Enable Auto-Normalize While Weight Painting
To prevent weight imbalances while actively painting your mesh, Blender includes an automatic normalization feature:
- Switch to Weight Paint Mode.
- Open the Sidebar by pressing
Nif it is not visible. - Go to the Tool tab.
- Expand the Options section.
- Check the box for Auto Normalize.
When Auto Normalize is enabled, painting weight onto one vertex group automatically reduces the weight from other connected groups, maintaining a total sum of 1.0 in real time.
