How to Move an Object to a Collection in Blender
Organizing your 3D scenes in Blender by using collections makes project management much easier. This guide covers the quickest step-by-step methods to move single or multiple objects into a new collection using keyboard shortcuts and the Outliner window.
Method 1: Using the Move Shortcut (Fastest Method)
The quickest way to move an object to a new collection is by using
the M key shortcut in the 3D Viewport.
- Select the object (or hold Shift to select multiple objects) in the 3D Viewport.
- Press M on your keyboard to open the Move to Collection popup menu.
- Click + New Collection at the top of the menu.
- Type a name for your new collection.
- Click OK or press Enter.
Blender will instantly create the new collection and transfer your selected objects into it.
Method 2: Using the Outliner Window
You can manually create collections and drag objects directly inside the Outliner panel.
- Locate the Outliner panel (found in the top-right corner of the default interface).
- Right-click an empty space in the Outliner list and choose New Collection.
- Double-click the newly created collection to rename it.
- Left-click and drag the object icon from its current position and drop it onto the new collection name.
Method 3: Link to a New Collection (Keep in Original Collection)
If you want an object to appear in a new collection without removing it from its current one, you can link it instead.
- Select the target object in the 3D Viewport.
- Press Shift + M to open the Add to Collection menu.
- Select + New Collection, name your collection, and click OK.
The object will now exist in both the original collection and the new collection simultaneously.
