How to Mirror Vertex Weights in Blender

Mirroring vertex weights in Blender allows you to quickly copy weight painting data from one side of a 3D model to the other across a specified axis. This process saves time during character rigging by ensuring symmetrical mesh deformation without manually painting both sides. By using Blender’s built-in tools—such as the Symmetrize function in Weight Paint Mode, the Mirror Vertex Group option, or the Mirror Modifier—you can automatically copy and transfer vertex groups using standard left-to-right naming conventions.

Important Prerequisite: Naming Conventions

Before mirroring weights, ensure your vertex groups or bones use Blender’s standard symmetry suffixes. Blender relies on these extensions to recognize opposite sides:

  • Left side: .L, _L, .l, or _l (e.g., Arm.L)
  • Right side: .R, _R, .r, or _r (e.g., Arm.R)

Method 1: Symmetrize All Weights (Weight Paint Mode)

This is the fastest method to mirror all vertex weights across the entire mesh at once.

  1. Select your mesh and switch to Weight Paint Mode.
  2. Click on the Weights menu in the top-left corner of the 3D Viewport.
  3. Select Symmetrize.
  4. Open the Symmetrize operator panel in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  5. Set the Direction to match your model's orientation (for example, -X to +X or +X to -X).

Blender will automatically mirror the active weights and assign them to the corresponding opposite vertex groups.

Method 2: Mirror a Single Vertex Group

If you only want to mirror the weight data of one specific bone or group, use the Object Data Properties panel.

  1. Select your mesh and go to the Object Data Properties tab (green triangle icon).
  2. Expand the Vertex Groups section and select the group you want to mirror (e.g., Bicep.L).
  3. Click the downward arrow icon on the right side of the Vertex Groups list.
  4. Select Copy Vertex Group. This creates a group named Bicep.L_copy.
  5. Click the downward arrow icon again and select Mirror Vertex Group.
  6. In the operator box at the bottom-left, ensure Mirror Weights is checked and the axis is correctly configured (usually X-axis).
  7. Rename the copied group to the opposite suffix (e.g., rename Bicep.L_copy to Bicep.R).

Method 3: Using the Mirror Modifier

If you are building a mesh from scratch, you can mirror weights dynamically using the Mirror Modifier.

  1. Select your mesh in Object Mode.
  2. Go to the Modifier Properties tab (blue wrench icon) and add a Mirror modifier.
  3. Enable the Vertex Groups checkbox in the Mirror Modifier settings.
  4. Ensure your mesh has vertex groups assigned with standard .L and .R suffixes.
  5. Apply the modifier when your topology and rigging layout are complete.

Troubleshooting Weight Mirroring Issues

  • Topology Mismatch: Automatic mirroring requires symmetrical topology. If your mesh topology is asymmetrical, go to Edit Mode, select all vertices, press F3, search for Symmetrize, and mirror the geometry first.
  • Incorrect Axis: Blender mirrors along the object's Local Origin by default. If weights mirror incorrectly, switch to Object Mode, press Ctrl + A, and select Apply All Transforms to reset the origin and rotation.
