How to Make Text Follow a Curve in Blender
Making text follow a curve in Blender is a straightforward process that relies on pairing a Text object with a Curve object using the Curve modifier. By linking the text to a custom path, you can quickly create stylized 3D typography for logos, titles, and motion graphics. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step walkthrough to align, deform, and adjust your text along any curved line.
Step 1: Create the Text and Curve Objects
- Open Blender and clear default objects if necessary.
- Press
Shift + A, hover over Text, and click to add a Text object. - Press
Shift + A, hover over Curve, and select Bezier (or Circle depending on your target shape).
Step 2: Shape the Curve
- Select the Curve object.
- Press
Tabto enter Edit Mode. - Select and move the control points (
G) or rotate them (R) to form the path you want your text to follow. - Press
Tabto return to Object Mode.
Step 3: Align Origins and Apply Transformations
For the modifier to work predictably, both objects must share alignment and scale properties.
- Select both the Text and Curve objects.
- Press
Ctrl + Aand select All Transforms to reset location, rotation, and scale values to default. - Ensure both objects have their origin points in the same location (ideally at the center of the 3D grid).
Step 4: Apply the Curve Modifier
- Select the Text object.
- Navigate to the Modifier Properties tab (wrench icon) on the right sidebar.
- Click Add Modifier and select Curve from the Deform column.
- In the Curve modifier settings, click the Curve Object eyedropper or dropdown menu and select your Curve object.
Step 5: Fine-Tune Alignment and Spacing
If the text appears upside down, stretched, or off-center, adjust the following settings:
- Deform Axis: In the Curve modifier panel, switch between the axes (X, Y, Z, -X, -Y, -Z). By default, Blender aligns text along the positive X-axis.
- Sliding Text Along the Curve: Select the Text
object, press
G, thenX(or your chosen deform axis), and move your mouse to slide the text along the length of the curve. - Character Spacing: Select the Text object, open the Object Data Properties tab ('a' icon), expand the Paragraph section, and adjust Character Spacing or Offset X/Y to fix overlapping letters.
