How to Loop Cut and Slide in Blender
The Loop Cut and Slide tool is an essential feature in Blender used to add new edge loops to your 3D models, allowing for more detailed geometry and smoother subdivisions. This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to activate this tool, control the number of cuts, and precisely slide the new edges along your existing mesh.
Step-by-Step Guide to Loop Cutting and Sliding
To use the Loop Cut and Slide tool in Blender, follow these steps:
- Enter Edit Mode: Select your 3D object and press
Tabon your keyboard to switch from Object Mode to Edit Mode. - Activate the Tool: Press the keyboard shortcut
Ctrl + R. Alternatively, you can select the “Loop Cut” icon from the toolbar on the left side of the viewport. - Position the Cut: Hover your mouse cursor over an edge of your mesh. Blender will display a yellow preview line indicating where the cut will be made.
- Adjust the Number of Cuts: Before clicking, scroll your mouse wheel up or down to increase or decrease the number of cuts. You can also type a number on your keyboard to specify the exact number of edge loops.
- Place and Slide the Cut: Left-click once to confirm the cut. After clicking, move your mouse to slide the new edge loop along the geometry.
- Finalize the Cut: Left-click a second time to release the edge loop at your desired position. If you want to keep the new cut perfectly centered without sliding, right-click instead.
Useful Modifiers While Sliding
While sliding the edge loop, you can use these shortcuts for extra precision:
- Even Slide (
E): PressEto make the new edge loop match the shape of one of the adjacent edge loops. - Flip Shape (
F): If you have enabled Even Slide, pressFto flip the alignment to the opposite adjacent edge loop. - Snapping (
Ctrl): HoldCtrlwhile sliding to snap the loop to grid increments or other geometry elements.
