How to Lock Object Transformations in Blender

Locking an object's transformation properties in Blender prevents accidental movement, rotation, or scaling during your modeling and animation workflow. By restricting specific axes, you can safeguard complex layouts, character rigs, and precise scene alignments. This guide explains how to lock Location, Rotation, and Scale values using the Object Properties panel and the Sidebar menu.

Method 1: Using the Sidebar (N-Panel)

  1. Select the object in the 3D Viewport.
  2. Press N on your keyboard to toggle open the Sidebar if it is not visible.
  3. Click the Item tab at the top of the Sidebar.
  4. Locate the Transform section, which displays values for Location, Rotation, and Scale.
  5. Click the padlock icon next to any X, Y, or Z axis value to lock that specific channel. When locked, the icon changes to a closed padlock, and the input field turns gray.

Method 2: Using the Object Properties Tab

  1. Select the object you want to lock.
  2. In the Properties Editor (usually on the bottom right), click the Object Properties tab (represented by a small orange square icon).
  3. Expand the Transform panel at the top.
  4. Click the padlock icon next to the Location, Rotation, or Scale axis you want to restrict.

Quick Tips for Managing Locks

  • Locking Entire Groups: Click and drag down across all three padlock icons (X, Y, Z) in a single column to quickly lock or unlock all axes for Location, Rotation, or Scale at once.
  • Shortcut Behavior: Once locked, pressing transform shortcuts like G (Grab/Move), R (Rotate), or S (Scale) will automatically ignore the locked axes, restricting movement only to the unlocked channels.
  • Delta Transforms: If you need to lock offset values separate from the main transform values, expand the Delta Transform sub-panel under the Object Properties tab and lock the padlocks there.
