How to Limit F-Curve Values in Blender

Limiting the value of an F-Curve in Blender prevents an animated property from exceeding specific minimum or maximum thresholds. This is achieved by applying the Limits modifier directly to the animation curve inside the Graph Editor. This guide explains the exact steps to locate, apply, and configure this modifier to keep your animation data within safe, predictable boundaries.

Step 1: Open the Graph Editor

  1. Switch your current workspace area to the Graph Editor, or press Shift + F6 to toggle the editor type.
  2. In the Graph Editor channel list on the left side, select the specific object channel or property (such as X Location, Z Rotation, etc.) whose curve you want to restrict.

Step 2: Open the Modifiers Panel

  1. Ensure the target curve is selected (it will be highlighted).
  2. Press N on your keyboard to open the Sidebar on the right side of the Graph Editor.
  3. Click on the Modifiers tab in the sidebar.

Step 3: Add the Limits Modifier

  1. Click the Add Modifier dropdown menu.
  2. Select Limits from the list of available F-Curve modifiers.

Step 4: Configure the Value Limits

Once the modifier is added, configure the boundary settings in the modifier panel:

  • Minimum Value / Maximum Value: Enable the checkbox for Minimum Value (to prevent the curve from dropping below a set number) or Maximum Value (to prevent it from rising above a set number), then enter your desired numerical limit in the corresponding field.
  • Restrict Frame Range: If you only want the limit applied during a specific segment of the timeline, check Restrict Frame Range and define the start and end frames.
  • Blend In / Blend Out: Use these options to smoothly transition the limit effect over a specified number of frames rather than clamping the value abruptly.

The F-Curve will immediately reflect the applied limits in the viewport and Graph Editor, flattening the peaks or valleys that extend beyond your specified values without deleting the underlying keyframes.
