How to Instance a Collection in Blender
Instancing a collection in Blender allows you to duplicate groups of objects efficiently without increasing your file size or memory usage. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step walkthrough on how to create, place, and manage collection instances in Blender, as well as how to break them back into individual objects when needed.
Steps to Instance a Collection
Step 1: Organize Objects into a Collection
- Select the objects you want to group together in the 3D Viewport.
- Press M on your keyboard to open the Move to Collection menu.
- Click New Collection, enter a name for your collection, and click OK.
Step 2: Add the Collection Instance
There are two primary ways to add an instance of your collection into the scene:
Method A: Using the Add Menu
- Press Shift + A in the 3D Viewport to open the Add menu.
- Hover over Collection Instance at the bottom of the menu.
- Select the name of the collection you created.
Method B: Drag and Drop from the Outliner
- Locate your collection in the Outliner window (top-right by default).
- Right-click the collection name.
- Select Instance to Scene. Alternatively, you can click and drag the collection icon directly into the 3D Viewport while holding Shift.
Managing Collection Instances
- Global Editing: Any changes made to the original objects in the primary collection (such as modifying geometry, materials, or transformations) will automatically update across all instances.
- Transformations: You can move, rotate, and scale each instance independently without affecting the original collection.
- Converting Instances to Real Objects: If you need to edit an instance separately, select the instance, press Ctrl + A, and select Make Instances Real. This converts the instance back into independent, editable mesh objects.
