How to Increase Curve Resolution in Blender

Increasing the resolution of a curve in Blender is essential for creating smoother 3D models, paths, and extrusions. This guide explains how to quickly adjust curve resolution globally through the Object Data Properties panel, smooth out bevels, and manually add detail to specific sections by subdividing control points in Edit Mode.

Method 1: Adjust Global Curve Resolution (Resolution Preview U)

To increase the smoothness of the entire curve along its length:

  1. Select your curve in the viewport.
  2. Go to the Object Data Properties tab (the green curve icon) in the Properties panel on the right.
  3. Open the Shape drop-down menu.
  4. Locate the Resolution Preview U setting.
  5. Increase the value (the default is typically 12). Higher values generate more vertices along the curve, resulting in a smoother shape.

If you plan to convert the curve to a mesh later, the Resolution Preview U determines the vertex density of the converted mesh.

Method 2: Subdivide Control Points in Edit Mode

To add resolution to specific parts of a curve rather than the whole object:

  1. Select the curve and press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
  2. Select two or more adjacent control points where you need more detail (or press A to select all points).
  3. Right-click in the viewport and select Subdivide from the context menu.
  4. Expand the Subdivide box in the bottom-left corner of the screen to adjust the Number of Cuts if you need more segment divisions.

Method 3: Increase Bevel Resolution for 3D Curves

If your curve has thickness added via a bevel profile, you may need to smooth out the circular cross-section:

  1. Select the curve and open the Object Data Properties tab.
  2. Expand the Geometry section, then open the Bevel subsection.
  3. Under Round, increase the Resolution value.
  4. Higher values add more geometry around the circumference of the bevel, making the curve look rounder and less faceted.
