How to Extrude 2D Curves into 3D in Blender

Extruding a 2D curve into a 3D shape in Blender is an efficient way to create non-destructive models such as pipes, ribbons, text, and architectural elements. This article provides a step-by-step guide on creating a curve, using the Geometry panel in Object Data Properties to add 3D thickness, customizing bevels, and converting the final result into a standard editable 3D mesh.

Step 1: Add a Curve to Your Scene

  1. Open Blender and press Shift + A to open the Add menu.
  2. Hover over Curve and select your preferred type, such as Bezier or Nurbs Curve.
  3. Press Tab to enter Edit Mode to reshape your 2D curve using its handles and vertices. Press Tab again to return to Object Mode.

Step 2: Access the Object Data Properties

  1. Select your curve in the 3D Viewport.
  2. Go to the Properties panel on the right side of the screen.
  3. Click on the Object Data Properties tab (represented by a green curve icon).

Step 3: Extrude the Curve

  1. In the Object Data Properties panel, expand the Geometry section.
  2. Locate the Extrude slider under the Modification subsection.
  3. Increase the Extrude value by dragging the slider or entering a specific number. This extends the curve along its profile to create height and depth.

Step 4: Add Depth and Bevels

To turn a thin curve into a rounded or solid shape:

  1. Scroll down to the Bevel subsection within the Geometry panel.
  2. Select Round mode.
  3. Increase the Depth setting to add radius and volume around the curve.
  4. Increase the Resolution setting to make the rounded edges smoother.
  5. If you want a flat shape with closed top and bottom faces, ensure the curve shape is set to 2D in the Shape subsection and set Fill Mode to Both.

Step 5: Convert the Curve to a 3D Mesh

If you need to perform standard polygon modeling on your new 3D shape:

  1. Select the curve in Object Mode.
  2. Right-click in the viewport to open the context menu.
  3. Navigate to Convert To and select Mesh.

Once converted, the curve properties will be baked, and the object can be edited using standard mesh tools in Edit Mode.
