How to Enable Landscape Addon in Blender

Blender comes with a powerful built-in tool called the A.N.T. Landscape add-on, which allows users to generate diverse and highly customizable 3D terrains without relying on third-party software. This guide covers how to activate the native add-on, insert a terrain mesh into your scene, and configure the primary parameters—such as noise types, mesh resolution, presets, and height settings—to achieve realistic landscapes quickly.

Enabling the A.N.T. Landscape Add-on

The Landscape tool is included with Blender by default, but it must be enabled manually before use:

  1. Open Blender and go to Edit in the top menu bar.
  2. Select Preferences from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the Preferences window, select the Add-ons tab on the left.
  4. Use the search bar in the top right and type Landscape.
  5. Check the box next to Add Mesh: A.N.T.Landscape.
  6. Close the Preferences window. The add-on is now active.

Adding a Landscape to Your Scene

  1. In the 3D Viewport, press Shift + A (or go to Add in the top-left menu).
  2. Hover over Mesh.
  3. Select Landscape near the bottom of the list. A default terrain grid will appear in the viewport.

Configuring the Landscape Settings

Immediately after adding the landscape, an Operator Panel titled "Landscape" will appear in the bottom-left corner of the viewport. If collapsed, click the arrow to expand it. (Note: Interacting with other objects or clicking elsewhere in the scene will close this menu permanently for that mesh.)

Key settings to configure:

  • Operator Presets: Located at the top of the panel. Choose from predefined terrains such as Canyon, Mesa, Dunes, Mountain, or Planet to quickly load base configurations.
  • Subdivisions (Mesh Resolution): Adjust Subdivisions X and Subdivisions Y to control the polygon density. Higher values provide more detail at the cost of performance.
  • Mesh Size: Use Mesh Size X and Mesh Size Y to scale the overall physical dimensions of the landscape.
  • Noise Type and Basis: The Noise Type setting (such as Multi Fractal, Hybrid Multifractal, or Ridged Multi Fractal) changes the underlying algorithm that shapes the geometry. Adjust the Noise Size to scale the terrain features larger or smaller.
  • Random Seed: Change the Random Seed value to generate entirely new variations using the current settings.
  • Height and Offset: Adjust Height to increase vertical displacement and Offset to raise or lower the terrain base relative to the origin.
  • Falloff: Enable edge falloff (X or Y axes) to taper the boundaries down to flat ground, which is ideal for creating isolated islands or self-contained map tiles.
  • Water Plane: Enable the Water Plane checkbox at the bottom of the panel to automatically add a separate, flat water plane at a specified sea level.

Post-Configuration Adjustments

Once you deselect the mesh or perform another action, the procedural generator panel disappears. To make further adjustments after closing the generator panel, you can switch to Sculpt Mode to refine the geometry manually, apply materials with procedural shaders, or add a Displace Modifier with custom heightmaps.
