How to Enable Depth of Field in Blender Viewport

This article provides a straightforward guide on how to enable and preview Depth of Field (DoF) directly inside the Blender 3D viewport. By properly configuring your camera settings and adjusting your viewport shading modes, you can accurately preview camera focus and cinematic blur effects in real time without waiting for full renders.

Step 1: Switch to the Camera View

To see Depth of Field as your camera sees it, you must look through the active camera. Select the camera in your scene and press Numpad 0 (or go to View > Viewpoint > Camera in the top menu).

Step 2: Enable Depth of Field in Camera Settings

  1. Select your Camera object in the Outliner or 3D Viewport.
  2. Go to the Properties Panel on the right side and click the Object Data Properties tab (represented by a green camera icon).
  3. Locate the Depth of Field section and check the box to turn it on.

Step 3: Set Focus Distance and Aperture

  1. Expand the Depth of Field panel settings.
  2. Set the focus point using one of two methods:
    • Focus Object: Click the eyedropper tool and select an object in your scene that should remain in sharp focus.
    • Focus Distance: If no object is selected, manually adjust the distance slider until your target subject is in focus.
  3. Expand the Aperture subsection:
    • Lower the F-Stop value (e.g., f/1.4 or f/2.8) to create a shallow depth of field with a strong background blur.
    • Increase the F-Stop value (e.g., f/8 or f/16) to keep more of the scene in focus.

Step 4: Preview Depth of Field in the Viewport

To make the Depth of Field effect visible in your 3D Viewport, set your display mode:

  • In Rendered Mode (Eevee or Cycles): Switch your viewport shading mode to Rendered (the rightmost sphere icon in the top right of the 3D Viewport). Depth of Field displays automatically based on your camera settings.
  • In Material Preview Mode: Switch to Material Preview shading. Click the Viewport Shading Options dropdown arrow (next to the shading icons) and ensure Depth of Field is checked.
  • In Solid Mode: Switch to Solid Shading. Click the Viewport Shading Options dropdown arrow and check the Depth of Field box to preview blur even in solid display mode.
