How to Edit Text in Blender

Editing text in Blender is a straightforward process that involves creating a text object, switching from Object Mode to Edit Mode, and typing your desired message. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to enter text edit mode, modify text properties like fonts and spacing, add 3D depth, and convert your text into a standard 3D mesh.

Step 1: Enter Edit Mode to Change the Text

  1. Add a Text Object: Press Shift + A in the 3D Viewport, navigate to Text, and click to create a new text object.
  2. Switch to Edit Mode: Select the text object and press the Tab key on your keyboard. Alternatively, click the mode selection dropdown menu in the top-left corner of the 3D Viewport and select Edit Mode.
  3. Type Your Text: Use the Backspace or Delete keys to remove the default word "Text", then type your desired text.
  4. Exit Edit Mode: Press Tab again to switch back to Object Mode once you are finished typing.

Step 2: Customizing Text Properties

To change the font, alignment, or appearance of your text, use the Object Data Properties tab:

  1. Select your text object.
  2. Look at the Properties panel on the right side of the screen and click the green 'a' icon (Object Data Properties).

Changing the Font

  • Expand the Font section.
  • Click the folder icon next to the Regular font style field to browse your computer for standard font files (.ttf or .otf).

Adjusting Alignment and Spacing

  • Expand the Paragraph section.
  • Use Horizontal and Vertical alignment settings to position the origin point of the text (e.g., Left, Center, Right).
  • Adjust Character Spacing, Word Spacing, and Line Spacing under the Spacing subsection.

Step 3: Making the Text 3D (Extrusion and Bevel)

  1. In the Object Data Properties tab, expand the Geometry section.
  2. Increase the Extrude value to add thickness and convert flat text into a 3D object.
  3. To smooth sharp edges, locate the Bevel subsection and slightly increase the Depth value.

Step 4: Convert Text to Mesh (Optional)

If you want to edit individual vertices or apply complex 3D modifiers, convert the text object into a standard mesh:

  1. Select the text object in Object Mode.
  2. Right-click the object in the 3D Viewport.
  3. Select Convert To > Mesh.

Note: Once converted to a mesh, you can no longer edit the text content using the keyboard.
