How to Delete a Selected Object in Blender

Deleting a selected object in Blender is a fundamental skill that can be done using keyboard shortcuts, the 3D Viewport context menu, or the Outliner panel. This guide explains the fastest methods to remove objects from your 3D scene in Object Mode, as well as the difference between deleting entire objects versus mesh components in Edit Mode.

Method 1: Using Keyboard Shortcuts (Fastest)

  1. Select the Object: Left-click the object in the 3D Viewport to highlight it.
  2. Press the Delete Key:
    • X Key: Pressing X opens a small prompt asking to confirm "Delete." Click it or press Enter to confirm.
    • Delete Key: Pressing the Delete key removes the selected object instantly without requiring confirmation.

Method 2: Using the Right-Click Menu

  1. Select the object in the 3D Viewport by left-clicking it.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the 3D Viewport to open the Object Context Menu.
  3. Scroll down and click Delete.

Method 3: Deleting from the Outliner

  1. Locate the Outliner panel (usually in the top-right corner of the Blender interface).
  2. Find the name of the object you want to remove.
  3. Right-click the object's name and select Delete, or click it once and press X or Delete on your keyboard.

Important Considerations

  • Object Mode vs. Edit Mode:
    • In Object Mode, deleting removes the entire 3D object from the scene.
    • In Edit Mode, pressing X or Delete opens a menu asking whether you want to delete specific Vertices, Edges, or Faces, rather than the entire object container. Make sure you are in Object Mode (press Tab to switch) if you wish to remove the whole object.
  • Hiding vs. Deleting: If you want to temporarily remove an object from view without deleting it, select the object and press H. To bring hidden objects back, press Alt + H.
  • Undo: If you accidentally delete an object, press Ctrl + Z to immediately restore it.
