How to Create Reusable Node Groups in Blender
This guide explains what node groups are in Blender, how they streamline complex workflows across shader, geometry, and compositing editors, and the exact steps to turn them into reusable assets. By grouping nodes and saving them to Blender's Asset Browser, you can create a modular library of custom materials, modifiers, and effects that can be instantly dropped into any current or future 3D project.
What Are Node Groups?
A node group is a container that bundles multiple interconnected nodes into a single, compact node. Instead of maintaining large, chaotic node networks across multiple objects, node groups allow you to collapse complex logic into a single node with custom input and output sockets.
Node groups offer several key advantages:
- Clutter Reduction: Condenses sprawling node trees into an organized, readable layout.
- Non-Destructive Tweaking: Exposes only the essential parameters (such as color, roughness, or scale) on the outside of the group.
- Global Updates: When you edit a node group, every material or modifier referencing that specific group updates simultaneously.
How to Create a Node Group
- Select Nodes: In the Shader, Geometry, or
Compositor Editor, hold
Shiftand select the nodes you want to combine (do not select the final Material Output node). - Group Nodes: Press
Ctrl + G(or go to Node > Make Group in the top menu). The interface will immediately switch to the internal view of your new group. - Configure Inputs and Outputs: Connect any values you want accessible from the outside to the Group Input and Group Output nodes.
- Customize Sockets: Press
Nto open the sidebar. Under the Group or Node tab, you can rename sockets, set default values, and define minimum/maximum slider limits. - Exit the Group: Press
Tabto return to the main node tree. PressTabagain with the group selected whenever you need to edit its internal structure.
How to Package Node Groups as Reusable Assets
To use your node groups across different blend files without manually copying and pasting them, save them to Blender's Asset Browser.
1. Name the Node Group
Select your node group, press N to open the sidebar, and
give it a clear, descriptive name in the Node panel
(for example, Custom Glass Shader or Procedural Brick
Generator).
2. Mark the Node Group as an Asset
- Open the Outliner and switch the display mode from View Layer to Blender File.
- Expand the Node Groups folder to locate your newly created group.
- Right-click the node group and select Mark as Asset. A small asset icon will appear next to its name.
3. Organize in the Asset Browser
- Open the Asset Browser editor window in Blender.
- Select Current File from the library dropdown menu.
- Assign the node group to a specific catalog or add tags and
descriptions in the metadata sidebar (
Npanel) to make it easily searchable.
4. Save to Your Asset Library
For the asset to appear in all future projects:
- Save the
.blendfile into a dedicated directory on your computer designated for Blender assets. - Go to Edit > Preferences > File Paths.
- Under the Asset Libraries section, click the
+icon and add the folder path where your asset file is saved.
Once configured, your custom node group will be available directly from the Asset Browser or the Add > Group menu in any project.
