How to Create Blank Image for Texture Painting in Blender
Texture painting in Blender requires an image canvas to store your paint strokes, making the creation of a blank image a fundamental initial step. This guide explains how to quickly create, configure, and assign a new blank image texture to your 3D model using Blender's Texture Paint workspace and Shader Editor, ensuring your workflow is ready for digital painting.
Method 1: Using the Texture Paint Workspace
- Select Your Object: Left-click your 3D model in the 3D Viewport to ensure it is active.
- Switch Workspaces: Click on the Texture Paint tab at the top of the Blender interface.
- Add a Texture Slot:
- In the Active Tool Settings panel on the right (or the top header), locate the Texture Slots section.
- If no canvas exists, click the + icon (Add Canvas) and select Base Color.
- Configure Image Settings:
- Name: Set a clear name for your texture (e.g.,
Base_Color_Map). - Width / Height: Set the resolution (1024x1024 is default; use 2048x2048 or 4096x4096 for higher detail).
- Color: Click the color box to set the background color of the canvas.
- Alpha: Keep enabled if you need transparency, or uncheck if you do not.
- Name: Set a clear name for your texture (e.g.,
- Confirm: Click OK to generate the canvas. You can now paint directly onto the model.
Method 2: Using the Shader Editor
- Select your object and open the Shader Editor area.
- Ensure the object has an active Material. If it does not, click New in the header.
- Press Shift + A, navigate to Texture, and select Image Texture.
- Click to place the new Image Texture node inside the node graph.
- Click the + New button on the Image Texture node.
- Set the Name, Width, Height, and base Color in the pop-up panel, then click OK.
- Connect the Color output of the Image Texture node into the Base Color input of the Principled BSDF shader node.
- Switch the 3D Viewport mode from Object Mode to Texture Paint mode to begin drawing.
Important: Saving Your Image
Blender does not automatically save newly created images to your hard
drive when you save the .blend file. To save your painted
image:
- Open the Image Editor workspace or window area.
- Select your new image from the header drop-down menu.
- Click Image > Save As (or press Alt + S) to save the image file to your disk.
- Alternatively, click Image > Pack to embed the image data directly inside your Blender project file.
