How to Create Bevels in Blender Sculpt Mode with Mesh Filter
Creating clean, hard-surface bevels directly inside Blender's Sculpt Mode allows you to refine edges without constantly switching back to Edit Mode or relying on modifier stacks. By pairing Face Sets with the Mesh Filter tool, you can isolate edge boundaries and apply controlled smoothing, sharpening, and relaxation filters across high-density voxel meshes. This workflow provides an efficient, non-destructive feel for concept sculpting and mechanical modeling.
Step 1: Prepare the Topology
For the Mesh Filter to produce clean bevels, the mesh must have adequate and uniform resolution:
- In Sculpt Mode, open the Remesh dropdown in the top header (or press Ctrl + R).
- Set a low Voxel Size (e.g.,
0.01to0.005depending on your object scale). - Press Voxel Remesh (Ctrl + R) to generate a uniform topology across the entire mesh.
Step 2: Define Hard Edges Using Face Sets
Face Sets tell Blender where your hard surfaces meet, creating boundaries that the Mesh Filter can target specifically.
- In the top Sculpt menu, go to Face Sets > Face Sets by Angles.
- Adjust the Angle Threshold in the bottom-left
pop-up menu (typically between
30°and45°) until each flat plane of your geometry is assigned a distinct color.
Step 3: Configure the Mesh Filter Tool
The Mesh Filter applies global operations across the entire mesh or filtered selections.
- Select the Mesh Filter from the left toolbar (shortcut: Shift + T).
- In the Tool Settings at the top bar or sidebar (N panel), set the Filter Type to Relax Face Sets or Smooth.
- Under the Advanced or Masking
settings of the filter:
- Check Face Sets (or set orientation to target boundaries only).
- If using the Smooth filter, ensure Use Face Sets is enabled to prevent adjacent flat planes from collapsing into each other.
Step 4: Apply and Control the Bevel
- Left-click and drag your mouse horizontally in the 3D Viewport to apply the filter.
- Dragging to the right rounds and softens the edges between Face Sets, creating a uniform chamfer or bevel.
- Release the mouse button to confirm the operation.
Step 5: Sharpen the Bevel Transitions
To prevent the rounded edges from looking soft or clay-like:
- Change the Filter Type in the Mesh Filter settings to Sharpen.
- Left-click and drag slightly to the right in the viewport.
- This action pulls vertices along high-curvature areas tight against the newly formed bevel borders, producing crisp, production-ready hard-surface bevels directly on your sculpt.
