How to Create a Single Bone in Blender

Creating a single bone in Blender is the first step toward rigging characters, props, and mechanical objects for animation. This guide explains how to add an armature to your 3D scene, make the bone visible through objects, and adjust its position using Blender's basic transformation tools.

Step 1: Add a Single Bone Armature

  1. Open Blender and ensure you are in Object Mode (press Tab to switch modes if needed).
  2. Position your 3D Cursor where you want the bone to appear (click to place it, or press Shift + C to center it).
  3. Press Shift + A to open the Add menu.
  4. Select Armature. Blender will automatically spawn a single bone at the 3D Cursor position.

Step 2: Make the Bone Visible

Bones are often obscured by 3D meshes. To make your bone visible through objects:

  1. Select the bone in the viewport.
  2. Go to the Object Data Properties tab in the Properties panel on the right (icon shaped like a green stick figure).
  3. Expand the Viewport Display panel.
  4. Check the box labeled In Front.

Step 3: Modify the Single Bone

To change the size, shape, or position of your bone:

  1. Select the bone and press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
  2. Click directly on the head (bottom joint), tail (top joint), or body of the bone to select that specific part.
  3. Use the basic Blender transformation keys:
    • Press G to move the selected joint or body.
    • Press R to rotate the bone.
    • Press S to scale the bone.
  4. Press Tab to exit Edit Mode and return to Object Mode once you are finished.
