How to Create a Screw or Helix in Blender

This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to generate parametric screws, springs, and helix shapes in Blender using the Screw Modifier. By manipulating basic profile geometry and modifier parameters like Screw height, Angle, and Iterations, you can create fully customizable, non-destructive 3D spirals suitable for mechanical parts or stylized assets.

1. Create the Base Profile

The shape of your helix or screw thread depends on the initial 2D or 3D mesh profile you create.

  1. Press Shift + A in the 3D Viewport and add a base mesh (e.g., a Circle for a spring, or a single Vertex / Plane for a custom screw thread).
  2. Press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
  3. Move the geometry along the X or Y axis away from the object’s origin point (G -> X or G -> Y). The distance between the vertices and the origin point determines the radius of the helix.
  4. Scale or rotate the profile vertices to match the desired cross-section of your screw or coil.

2. Add the Screw Modifier

  1. Press Tab to return to Object Mode.
  2. Go to the Modifier Properties tab (wrench icon) on the right-hand panel.
  3. Click Add Modifier and select Screw (located under the Generate column).

3. Adjust the Parametric Properties

To shape the spiral correctly, configure the primary settings in the Screw Modifier panel:

  • Axis: Select the axis along which the spiral extends (typically set to Z by default).
  • Screw: Adjust this value to set the distance of a single 360-degree revolution (the pitch). Setting this higher creates an open spring/helix; setting it equal to your profile's height creates continuous threads.
  • Angle: Controls the rotation angle per revolution. Keep this at 360° for standard full turns.
  • Iterations: Controls the total count of full turns. Increase this number to make the screw or spring longer without altering the pitch.
  • Steps Viewport / Render: Determines the number of segments per revolution. Higher values yield smoother curves (e.g., 32 or 64).

4. Optional Adjustments and Shading

  • Calculate Order / Flip Normals: If the mesh appears black, inside-out, or shaded incorrectly, check Calculate Order or Flip under the modifier's Normals dropdown.
  • Merge: Enable Merge to automatically weld vertices that meet along the central axis.
  • Axis Object: Assign an Empty to the Axis Object field if you wish to control the rotation angle, pitch, and orientation dynamically via another object's transform coordinates.
  • Smooth Shading: Right-click the object in the viewport and select Shade Auto Smooth (or Shade Smooth) for a clean surface finish.
