How to Control Metaball Influence Radius in Blender
Controlling the influence radius of a metaball in Blender determines how strongly it interacts, merges, or stretches toward nearby metaball objects. You can adjust this interaction globally across the entire metaball family using the Object Data Properties panel, or fine-tune individual metaball elements using scale transforms and stiffness controls in Edit Mode. This guide outlines the exact methods to adjust metaball influence radii for precise control over your 3D models.
1. Adjust the Global Influence (Threshold)
The Threshold setting determines the global surface boundary for how far metaball fields extend and fuse together.
- Select your metaball object in the 3D Viewport.
- Go to the Properties panel on the right side of the screen.
- Click on the Object Data Properties tab (represented by a green metaball icon).
- Locate the Metaball section.
- Adjust the Threshold slider:
- Lower Values: Increases the influence range, making metaballs merge from farther away and appear thicker.
- Higher Values: Decreases the influence range, requiring metaballs to be much closer before they begin to fuse together.
2. Scale Individual Metaball Radius in Edit Mode
To change the physical size and influence field of a single metaball node within a group:
- Select the metaball object and press
Tabto enter Edit Mode. - Click on the specific metaball element (node) you want to modify.
You will see two concentric rings around the center point:
- The inner circle defines the base size of the element.
- The outer circle represents the outer limit of the influence radius.
- Press
Son your keyboard and drag your mouse to scale the element up or down. - Left-click to confirm. Scaling the element changes both its visual size and its influence field proportionally.
3. Change Element Stiffness
Stiffness controls how sharply a metaball drops off its field influence without changing the base element size.
- Enter Edit Mode (
Tab) and select the target metaball element. - Press
Nto open the Sidebar menu on the right side of the 3D Viewport (if it is not already visible). - Select the Item tab.
- Under the Active Element section, adjust the
Stiffness parameter:
- Higher Stiffness: Pulls the influence boundary inward, making the metaball retain a firmer shape with less blending into neighboring elements.
- Lower Stiffness: Allows the influence field to spread out further, creating a softer, more fluid blend with nearby metaballs.
4. Toggle Negative Influence for Subtractive Effects
Metaballs can also subtract from the influence radius of neighboring elements instead of merging with them.
- Select a metaball node in Edit Mode.
- Open the Item tab in the Sidebar
(
N). - Under Active Element, check the Negative box.
- Adjust the Stiffness or scale (
S) of the negative metaball to control how large of a hollow cutout area it carves out of intersecting metaballs.
