How to Configure Depth of Field in Blender
Configuring depth of field in Blender allows you to create cinematic renders by blurring the foreground or background around a specific point of interest. This guide explains how to enable Depth of Field on your active camera, choose a focus point using an object or distance, and fine-tune the blur intensity using aperture settings in both the EEVEE and Cycles render engines.
Step 1: Select the Active Camera
- In the 3D Viewport, select your camera object.
- Ensure you are viewing through the active camera by pressing Numpad 0 (or going to View > Cameras > Active Camera).
Step 2: Enable Depth of Field
- Open the Properties panel (usually located on the right side of the interface).
- Click on the Object Data Properties tab (represented by a green camera icon).
- Check the box labeled Depth of Field to activate the feature.
Step 3: Set the Focus Target
Expand the Depth of Field dropdown menu to choose how the camera determines its focal point:
- Focus on Object: Click the eyedropper tool next to the Focus Object field and click on the target object in your scene. The camera will automatically maintain focus on this object, even if it moves.
- Focus Distance: If you prefer manual control, leave the Focus Object field empty and adjust the Distance slider to set the exact distance (in meters) from the camera lens to the focal plane.
Step 4: Adjust the Aperture (Blur Intensity)
Under the Aperture sub-section within the Depth of Field settings, control the strength and style of the background blur:
- F-Stop: This controls the depth of field thickness.
Lower values (e.g.,
f/1.4orf/2.8) create a shallow depth of field with heavy background blur. Higher values (e.g.,f/8.0orf/16.0) keep more of the scene in sharp focus. - Blades: Set the number of aperture blades (e.g.,
6for a hexagonal shape) to alter the geometric shape of the bokeh effect. - Rotation: Rotates the bokeh blade shape.
- Ratio: Simulates anamorphic lens distortion.
Step 5: Visualize the Focus Distance (Optional)
To make manual focusing easier:
- In the camera's Object Data Properties, expand the Viewport Display section.
- Check the Limits box.
- A yellow crosshair will appear along the camera's line of sight in the 3D Viewport, showing the exact point where the scene is in 100% focus.
