How to Change the Default Startup File in Blender
Changing the default startup file in Blender allows you to customize your workspace, camera settings, render engine, and layout every time you open a new project. Instead of deleting the default cube, adjusting render settings, or changing viewport layouts manually during every session, you can save your preferred environment directly as the default template. This step-by-step guide covers how to create, save, and reset your custom startup file in Blender.
Steps to Save a Custom Startup File
- Open a New File: Launch Blender or open a new general project by going to File > New > General.
- Customize Your Workspace: Modify the scene to fit
your personal workflow. Common adjustments include:
- Deleting Default Objects: Remove the default cube, lamp, or camera if you do not need them.
- Changing Render Engine: Switch from EEVEE to Cycles (or vice versa) in the Render Properties tab on the right panel.
- Adjusting Workspace Layout: Reorganize windows, change editor types, or add new tabs at the top.
- Setting Units and Dimensions: Adjust the scene unit system (Metric or Imperial) in the Scene Properties tab.
- Configuring Viewport Shading: Set your preferred lighting, color management, or overlay settings.
- Save the Startup File: Once your scene is configured, click on File in the top menu bar.
- Select Defaults from the drop-down menu.
- Click Save Startup File.
- A prompt will appear in the center of your screen asking for confirmation. Click Save Startup File again to confirm.
From this point on, whenever you launch Blender or start a new general file, your custom scene will load automatically.
How to Reset to Blender's Original Startup Settings
If you ever want to revert back to Blender's factory default scene, you can restore it easily without reinstalling the software:
- Click on File in the top menu.
- Select Defaults.
- Click Load Factory Settings.
- To make this factory reset permanent, go to File > Defaults > Save Startup File and confirm.
