How to Change Font of Text Object in Blender

Changing the font of a text object in Blender allows you to customize 3D typography using custom vector fonts. This process is managed within the Object Data Properties menu, where you can load standard font files such as TrueType (.ttf) or OpenType (.otf) directly from your computer to replace Blender's default font.

Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Fonts

1. Select the Text Object

Ensure you are in the 3D Viewport. Left-click on the text object you want to modify. If you haven't created one yet, press Shift + A, hover over Text, and click to add a new text object.

2. Open Object Data Properties

Look at the Properties panel on the right side of the screen. Click on the Object Data Properties tab, which is represented by a green icon shaped like a lowercase letter "a".

3. Navigate to the Font Section

In the Object Data Properties panel, scroll down until you see the Font dropdown menu and click to expand it.

4. Load Your New Font

Under the Font section, you will see options for different font styles: Regular, Bold, Italic, and Bold & Italic.

  1. Click the Folder icon next to the style you want to change (usually Regular).
  2. A file browser window will open. Navigate to the folder on your computer where your font files are stored:
    • Windows: C:\Windows\Fonts
    • macOS: /Library/Fonts or ~/Library/Fonts
    • Linux: /usr/share/fonts or ~/.local/share/fonts
  3. Select your desired .ttf or .otf font file.
  4. Click Open Font.

The text object in your 3D Viewport will instantly update to display the chosen font.

Important Considerations

  • Separate Style Files: Blender does not automatically generate bold or italic versions of a font. If you switch your text to bold or italic in Edit Mode, you must manually load the corresponding bold or italic .ttf/.otf files into their respective slots in the Font panel.
  • Extrude and Geometry: Changing the font preserves any 3D extrusion, beveling, or material settings previously applied to the text object.
  • Converting to Mesh: Once satisfied with the font choice, you can convert the text into a 3D mesh by right-clicking the text object in Object Mode and selecting Convert To > Mesh. Note that this action makes the text non-editable as a text object.
