How to Cast a Mesh into a Sphere in Blender

Casting a mesh into a sphere shape in Blender can be done quickly using either the built-in "To Sphere" transform tool for quick edit-mode changes or the non-destructive "Cast" modifier for dynamic modeling. Both methods require sufficient mesh geometry (subdivisions) to form a smooth curve, allowing you to turn cubes, grids, or complex objects into spherical shapes instantly.

Method 1: Using the "To Sphere" Tool (Edit Mode)

  1. Select your object in Object Mode and ensure it has enough geometry. If needed, right-click the mesh in Edit Mode and choose Subdivide to add more vertices.
  2. Enter Edit Mode by pressing Tab.
  3. Select all the vertices you want to shape by pressing A.
  4. Press Shift + Alt + S on your keyboard (or navigate to Mesh > Transform > To Sphere in the top menu).
  5. Move your mouse away from the object, or type 1 and press Enter to apply a 100% spherical transform.

Method 2: Using the Cast Modifier (Object Mode)

  1. Select your object in Object Mode.
  2. Go to the Modifier Properties tab (the blue wrench icon) on the right panel.
  3. Click Add Modifier and choose Cast under the Generate column.
  4. Set the Shape dropdown to Sphere (this is selected by default).
  5. Increase the Factor slider to 1.0 to make the object completely spherical.
  6. (Optional) Check the Use X, Use Y, or Use Z boxes if you only want to deform the mesh along specific axes.
  7. To make the transformation permanent, click the dropdown arrow on the modifier card and select Apply (or hover over it and press Ctrl + A).
