How to Calculate Bone Motion Paths in Blender

Motion paths in Blender visually represent the trajectory of an animated bone over time, allowing animators to refine spacing, timing, and arcs. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to calculate, customize, update, and clear motion paths for individual bones within Blender's Pose Mode.

1. Enter Pose Mode

  1. Select your armature in the 3D Viewport.
  2. Switch from Object Mode to Pose Mode using the mode dropdown in the top-left corner (or press Ctrl + Tab).

2. Select the Bone

Click on the specific bone (or hold Shift to select multiple bones) whose animation path you want to visualize.

3. Locate the Motion Paths Settings

You can access motion path calculations through two primary locations:

  • Properties Panel: Go to the Bone Properties tab (green bone icon) in the Properties Editor on the right, then expand the Motion Paths panel.
  • Viewport Menu: In the top header of the 3D Viewport, navigate to Pose > Motion Paths.

4. Configure the Path Range

Before calculating, define the timeframe for the motion path:

  • Around Frame: Calculates the path relative to the current frame (e.g., 10 frames before and 10 frames after).
  • In Range: Calculates the path across a specific absolute frame range by defining a Start and End frame.
  • Step: Determines the frequency of calculation points (a step of 1 calculates every frame for maximum accuracy).

5. Calculate the Motion Path

  1. Click the Calculate button in the Motion Paths panel (or select Pose > Motion Paths > Calculate from the header menu).
  2. A pop-up dialog may appear confirming the frame range and display settings. Choose whether to track the bone's Head or Tail.
  3. Click OK. The motion path will appear in the 3D Viewport as a colored line with points representing keyframes and frame steps.

6. Updating and Clearing Paths

  • Updating: If you make changes to your keyframes, the path does not update automatically. Click Update Path (or press the refresh icon next to the path settings) to reflect your new animation data.
  • Clearing: To remove the visual path, click the Clear Motion Path button (the X icon) in the Motion Paths panel or select Pose > Motion Paths > Clear.
