How to Bevel Edges in Blender
This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to use the bevel tool on edges in Blender. You will learn the keyboard shortcut to initiate a bevel, how to adjust the bevel’s width and segments using your mouse, and how to resolve the common scaling issues that cause uneven bevels.
Step 1: Select Your Edges in Edit Mode
To bevel an edge, you must first be in Edit Mode and have the target edges selected:
- Select your 3D object in the viewport.
- Press Tab to switch from Object Mode to Edit Mode.
- Press 2 on your keyboard (not the Numpad) or click the Edge Select icon in the top-left corner of the viewport to enable edge selection.
- Left-click the edge you want to bevel. To select multiple edges, hold Shift while clicking. To select an entire loop of edges, hold Alt and click an edge.
Step 2: Activate the Bevel Tool
The quickest way to apply a bevel is by using a keyboard shortcut:
- With your edges selected, press Ctrl + B.
- Move your mouse away from the selection to expand the bevel, or toward it to shrink it.
- Left-click to confirm the bevel, or right-click to cancel.
Step 3: Adjust Segments and Shape
While actively beveling (before you left-click to confirm), you can control the roundness of the edge:
- Scroll the mouse wheel up to add more segments, making the bevel rounded.
- Scroll the mouse wheel down to reduce segments, creating a flat, chamfered edge.
- Alternatively, use the Plus (+) and Minus (-) keys on your Numpad to add or remove segments.
Step 4: Fine-Tune with the Adjust Last Operation Panel
Once you click to confirm the bevel, a small menu labeled Bevel will appear in the bottom-left corner of the 3D viewport. Click this panel to expand it and access precise settings:
- Width: Adjusts the physical size of the bevel.
- Segments: Enter an exact number of cuts to control smoothness.
- Shape: A value of
0.5is a perfect round curve. Lower values make the bevel concave (curved inward), while higher values make it convex (curved outward).
Troubleshooting: Uneven or Stretched Bevels
If your bevel looks stretched, distorted, or uneven, it is because your object’s scale is not uniform. To fix this:
- Press Tab to go back to Object Mode.
- Press Ctrl + A to open the Apply menu.
- Select Scale. This resets the object’s scale coordinates to 1.0 on all axes.
- Return to Edit Mode and apply the bevel again; it will now be perfectly even.
