How to Bend Objects Using Simple Deform in Blender

The Simple Deform modifier in Blender is a versatile tool that allows you to bend, twist, taper, or stretch 3D objects non-destructively without manually altering individual vertices. Bending an object requires proper mesh density, selecting the correct deformation axis, and optionally using a target object to control the point of origin. This guide outlines the exact steps to apply and control the Simple Deform modifier to cleanly bend any object in Blender.

Step 1: Prepare Your Mesh Geometry

The Simple Deform modifier deforms existing vertices; it does not add new geometry. If your object does not have enough subdivisions along the bending plane, it will distort awkwardly or fail to bend.

  1. Select your object and press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
  2. Add subdivisions along the length of the object:
    • Press Ctrl + R to create Loop Cuts, scroll the mouse wheel to increase the cut count, and press Enter twice.
    • Alternatively, select all faces (A), right-click, and select Subdivide. Increase the Number of Cuts in the bottom-left popup menu.
  3. Press Tab to return to Object Mode.

Step 2: Apply Object Transformations

Unapplied scale or rotation can cause unpredictable bending behavior.

  1. In Object Mode, select your object.
  2. Press Ctrl + A to open the Apply menu.
  3. Select All Transforms (or Rotation & Scale).

Step 3: Add and Set Up the Modifier

  1. Go to the Properties Panel on the right side of the screen.
  2. Click on the Modifier Properties tab (the blue wrench icon).
  3. Click Add Modifier and select Simple Deform under the Deform column.
  4. In the modifier settings, change the mode from Twist to Bend.

Step 4: Adjust the Axis and Angle

  1. Set the Angle property to your desired bend degree (e.g., 90° or 180°).
  2. Experiment with the Axis options (X, Y, or Z) to find the direction that aligns with your object's orientation.

Step 5: Use an Empty Object for Precise Bending Control

By default, Blender bends the object around its own origin point. If the bend stretches or warps in an unexpected direction, using an Empty object as a custom origin provides full control over the bend's pivot point and axis.

  1. Press Shift + A and select Empty > Plain Axes.
  2. Select your main object and go back to the Simple Deform modifier settings.
  3. In the Origin field, click the eyedropper icon and select the Empty you just created.
  4. Select the Empty in the viewport and rotate it (R) along different axes (X, Y, or Z) until the bend aligns correctly with your mesh. Moving the Empty will also change the focal point of the curve.
