How to Bake Emission Data in Blender

Baking emission data in Blender converts light-emitting material properties into a 2D image texture, allowing real-time engines like Unity and Unreal Engine to render glow effects efficiently without dynamic lighting calculations. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step process for preparing your mesh, setting up the Shader Editor, configuring the Cycles engine, and saving your baked emission texture map.

Step 1: Switch to the Cycles Render Engine

Blender cannot bake textures using the Eevee engine.

  1. Go to the Render Properties tab (camera icon) in the right-hand panel.
  2. Change the Render Engine from Eevee to Cycles.

Step 2: Unwrap Your Mesh

To bake data correctly, your object requires a clean UV map without overlapping faces.

  1. Select your object and press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
  2. Press A to select all vertices.
  3. Press U and select Smart UV Project or Unwrap to ensure all geometry is properly laid out.

Step 3: Prepare the Material and Shader Nodes

Your object must have a material assigned that utilizes emission data.

  1. Open the Shader Editor workspace.
  2. Ensure your material uses an Emission node or has the Emission color and strength values set inside a Principled BSDF node.
  3. Press Shift + A, search for Image Texture, and add the node to the workspace.
  4. Click New on the Image Texture node.
  5. Name the image (e.g., "Emission_Bake"), set your desired resolution (e.g., 2048 x 2048), uncheck Alpha if not needed, and click OK.
  6. Crucial: Keep the Image Texture node selected (highlighted with a white border). Do not connect it to any other node.

Step 4: Configure Bake Settings

  1. Return to the Render Properties tab.
  2. Scroll down and expand the Bake section.
  3. Set the Bake Type dropdown menu to Emit.
  4. Adjust the Margin settings (under Influence/Output) to around 2px–16px to prevent texture seams along UV borders.

Step 5: Execute the Bake and Save

  1. Ensure your object is selected in the 3D Viewport and the new Image Texture node is selected in the Shader Editor.
  2. Click the Bake button at the top of the Bake section.
  3. Wait for the progress bar at the bottom of the screen to reach 100%.
  4. Open the Image Editor window and select your baked texture map from the dropdown menu.
  5. Go to Image > Save As to export your baked emission map to your computer as a PNG or JPEG file.
