How to Assign a Hook to Vertices in Blender

Assigning a hook to selected vertices in Blender allows you to deform specific parts of a mesh using an external object, such as an Empty or a bone. This technique is essential for precise animations, rigging, and dynamic mesh manipulations without altering the underlying geometry structure. This article provides a clear, step-by-step guide on how to quickly assign a hook modifier to your chosen vertices using keyboard shortcuts and manual object setup.

Method 1: Using the Keyboard Shortcut (Fastest Way)

  1. Select your object in the 3D Viewport and press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
  2. Select the specific vertices you want to attach to the hook.
  3. Press Ctrl + H to open the Hooks menu.
  4. Select Hook to New Object.

Blender will automatically create a new Empty object at the center of your selection, attach a Hook modifier to your mesh, and assign the selected vertices to that new Empty.

Testing the Hook:

  • Press Tab to switch back to Object Mode.
  • Select the newly created Empty object.
  • Press G and move the Empty; the assigned vertices will follow its transform.

Method 2: Hooking Vertices to an Existing Object

If you already have an object in your scene (such as an existing Empty, bone, or mesh) that you want to use as the control object:

  1. In Object Mode, select the object you want to use as the hook.
  2. Hold Shift and select your main mesh object.
  3. Press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
  4. Select the vertices you wish to attach to the hook.
  5. Press Ctrl + H and select Hook to Selected Object.

Method 3: Assigning Vertices via Vertex Groups and the Modifier Panel

You can also manually assign vertices to a Hook modifier using Vertex Groups for precise control:

  1. In Edit Mode, select the desired vertices.
  2. Go to the Object Data Properties panel (green triangle icon) on the right.
  3. Under the Vertex Groups section, click the + button to create a new group.
  4. Click Assign to assign the selected vertices to this group.
  5. Go to the Modifier Properties panel (wrench icon) and add a Hook modifier.
  6. In the modifier settings, set the Object field to your intended target object.
  7. In the Vertex Group field, select the group you created in Step 4.

Managing Existing Hooks

  • Assign More Vertices: Select the target vertices in Edit Mode, go to the Hook modifier in the Modifier Properties panel, and click Assign.
  • Remove Vertices: Select the vertices you want to detach in Edit Mode, go to the Hook modifier settings, and click Remove.
  • Reset Hook Position: If the mesh shifts unexpectedly when setting up the hook, go to the Hook modifier settings in Object Mode and click Reset to clear the transform offset.
