How to Apply Object Scale in Blender

Applying the scale of an object in Blender resets its internal transform scale values to 1.0 on all axes without changing its visible size in the 3D viewport. This process is essential for ensuring that modifiers, UV unwrapping, physics simulations, and sculpting tools behave predictably and without distortion.

Steps to Apply Scale

  1. Select the Object: Left-click your target object in the viewport to make it the active selection.
  2. Ensure You Are in Object Mode: Look at the top-left corner of the viewport to confirm you are in Object Mode (press Tab to switch out of Edit Mode if necessary).
  3. Open the Apply Menu: Press Ctrl + A on Windows/Linux or Cmd + A on macOS.
  4. Choose Scale: Click Scale from the dropdown menu. You can also select All Transforms if you want to apply location, rotation, and scale simultaneously.

How to Verify Scale Application

  1. Press N on your keyboard to open the Sidebar panel in the 3D Viewport.
  2. Select the Item tab.
  3. Check the Scale fields. If the operation was successful, the X, Y, and Z values will all display 1.000.

Why Applying Scale Matters

  • Modifiers: Bevel and Solidify modifiers require a scale of 1.0 to produce uniform edges and thickness.
  • Texturing: UV unwrapping uses scale data to project textures correctly; unapplied scale results in stretched or squished patterns.
  • Sculpting: Sculpting brushes scale unevenly across non-uniform axes if the object scale has not been applied.
  • Physics: Dynamics and collision bounds calculate mesh dimensions using the applied scale data.
