How to Apply a Look in Blender Color Management

Blender's Color Management system allows you to apply built-in contrast presets—known as "Looks"—to instantly adjust the tonal range and mood of your scene. This guide explains how to access the Color Management settings and apply contrast presets like High Contrast to your viewport and final renders.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying a Look

  1. Open the Render Properties Tab In the Properties editor (usually located on the right side of the screen), click the Render Properties icon, which looks like the back of a DSLR camera.

  2. Locate the Color Management Panel Scroll down to the bottom of the Render Properties list and click on the Color Management dropdown to expand its options.

  3. Verify the View Transform Ensure that the View Transform is set to your preferred color space.

    • In Blender 4.0 and newer, the default is AgX.
    • In Blender 3.x and older, the default is Filmic. (Note: The Standard transform does not support the full dynamic range presets available in AgX or Filmic).
  4. Select a Look Preset Locate the Look dropdown menu directly below the View Transform setting. Click the dropdown to view available presets and select your desired option:

    • High Contrast or Very High Contrast (deepens shadows and brightens highlights for a punchier image)
    • Medium High Contrast
    • Base Contrast or None (default)
    • Medium Low Contrast or Very Low Contrast (flattens the dynamic range)
  5. Fine-Tune with Exposure and Gamma (Optional) Directly beneath the Look setting, you can adjust:

    • Exposure: Increases or decreases the overall brightness of the scene in photographic stops.
    • Gamma: Modifies the midtone brightness without clipping extreme shadows or highlights.

Real-Time Preview

The selected Look applies globally in real time. You will see the changes immediately in the 3D Viewport when using Rendered shading mode (Z > Rendered) and across all final renders (F12) using Cycles or EEVEE.
