How to Animate Background Image Opacity in Blender

Animating the opacity of a background image in Blender allows you to create smooth fades, reference overlays, or dynamic visual effects during animation. Depending on whether you are working with viewport reference images or setting up a scene for final rendering, you can achieve this effect by keyframing the opacity settings in the Data Properties panel or by controlling the Alpha channel inside the Shader Editor.

Method 1: Animating Opacity for Viewport Reference Images

If you are using a reference image directly in the viewport or attached to a camera view, you can keyframe its built-in opacity setting.

  1. Select the Image: Click on the Reference Image in your 3D Viewport, or select your Camera if the image is set as a Camera Background Image.
  2. Open Object Data Properties: Navigate to the Object Data Properties tab (represented by an image icon for reference images, or a camera icon for cameras) in the right-hand Properties panel.
  3. Enable Opacity: Ensure the Opacity checkbox is enabled.
  4. Set the Initial Keyframe:
    • Move the timeline cursor to the starting frame.
    • Adjust the Opacity slider to your desired starting value (e.g., 1.0 for fully visible or 0.0 for transparent).
    • Hover your mouse over the Opacity slider and press I on your keyboard (or right-click and select Insert Keyframe). The slider box will turn yellow.
  5. Set the End Keyframe:
    • Move the timeline cursor to the frame where the fade should finish.
    • Change the Opacity slider to the target value.
    • Hover over the slider and press I again to insert the second keyframe.

Method 2: Animating Opacity for Rendered Planes (Shader Editor)

If your background image is a 3D mesh (such as a plane created via Import Images as Planes) and needs to appear in final renders, animate its material alpha value.

  1. Select the Background Mesh: Click on the plane containing your background image.
  2. Open the Shader Editor: Switch a workspace window to the Shader Editor.
  3. Locate the Alpha Input: Find the Principled BSDF node connected to the Material Output.
  4. Adjust Blend Mode (Eevee only): If using Eevee, go to Material Properties > Settings and change Blend Mode to Alpha Blend so transparency displays correctly.
  5. Keyframe the Alpha Value:
    • Move to your starting frame on the Timeline.
    • Hover over the Alpha value slot on the Principled BSDF node.
    • Set the value and press I to insert a keyframe.
    • Move to the ending frame, change the Alpha value, and press I again.

Fine-Tuning the Animation

To adjust the speed and interpolation of the opacity fade:

  1. Open the Graph Editor window.
  2. Select your image or plane.
  3. Tweak the keyframe handles to change the transition curve from linear to smooth (bezier) or custom easing curves.
