How to Align UV Vertices in Blender

Aligning UV vertices into a straight line in Blender is essential for creating clean, distortion-free textures along seams, trims, and hard edges. This quick guide explains the most direct methods to straighten UV map vertices using Blender's scale-to-zero technique, alignment menu commands, and the Follow Active Quads tool.

Method 1: Scale to Zero (Fastest Keyboard Shortcut)

The most efficient way to align UV vertices along a straight horizontal or vertical axis is using the scale tool combined with axis constraint keys.

To Align Vertices Horizontally (Straight line across):

  1. Open the UV Editing workspace and select the desired UV island or vertices.
  2. Select the line of vertices you want to flatten horizontally.
  3. Press S (Scale), then Y (Y-axis constraint), then 0 (Zero).
  4. Press Enter or click to confirm.

To Align Vertices Vertically (Straight line up and down):

  1. Select the line of vertices in the UV Editor.
  2. Press S (Scale), then X (X-axis constraint), then 0 (Zero).
  3. Press Enter or click to confirm.

Method 2: The Right-Click Align Menu

If you prefer using menus over numerical shortcuts, Blender includes built-in alignment commands.

  1. In the UV Editor, select the vertices you wish to align.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the UV Editor window.
  3. Hover over Align from the context menu.
  4. Choose one of the following options depending on your needs:
    • Align Auto: Automatically aligns selected vertices based on their layout.
    • Align X: Pulls all selected vertices into a straight vertical line along the X-axis.
    • Align Y: Pulls all selected vertices into a straight horizontal line along the Y-axis.
    • Straighten: Straightens selected edge lines between endpoints.

Method 3: Follow Active Quads (For Entire UV Loops/Strips)

When dealing with complex geometry like pipes, cables, or curved meshes, you can straighten an entire strip of faces at once.

  1. Ensure your mesh geometry consists of quad faces (four-sided polygons).
  2. Straighten just one single quad face in the UV Editor using Method 1 or Method 2 until it forms a perfect rectangle.
  3. Select the straightened face so it becomes the Active Selection (it will appear with a brighter outline).
  4. Select the rest of the connected faces in the UV loop (press L over the island or select all faces).
  5. In the 3D Viewport, press U and select Follow Active Quads.
  6. Click OK in the pop-up panel. The entire strip will instantly snap into a straightened grid layout based on the active quad.
