How to Align Curve Handles in Blender
Aligning curve handles in Blender is essential for creating smooth, precise vector shapes, motion paths, and 3D models. This guide covers the quickest and most effective methods to align Bézier curve handles, including using preset handle types, axis scaling shortcuts, and snapping tools to ensure clean geometry and seamless transitions.
Method 1: Use the Aligned Handle Type
Blender has a built-in handle mode specifically designed to keep handles perfectly collinear (aligned in a straight line).
- Select your curve object and press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
- Click on the curve vertex or the specific handles you want to align.
- Press V on your keyboard to open the Set Handle Type menu.
- Select Aligned.
Once set to Aligned, moving one handle will automatically rotate the opposite handle so that both form a continuous, straight line through the control point.
Method 2: Scale Handles to Zero on an Axis
If you want to align multiple handles along a specific straight line (horizontally, vertically, or along a global/local axis):
- In Edit Mode, select the handles you want to align. You can select single handles, entire vertices, or multiple handles across different points.
- Press S (Scale).
- Press the axis key you want to align along: X, Y, or Z.
- Type 0 and press Enter.
For example, pressing S -> Y -> 0 -> Enter will instantly flatten all selected handles to the exact same Y-position, making them perfectly horizontal.
Method 3: Snap Handles to Grid or Geometry
To align handles to specific grid intersections or other objects in your scene:
- Enable Snapping by clicking the Magnet icon at the top of the viewport (or press Shift + Tab).
- Set the snap target (e.g., Increment for grid alignment, or Vertex to align with existing geometry).
- Select a handle and press G to move it.
- (Optional) Lock movement to a single direction by pressing X, Y, or Z.
- Drag the handle until it snaps to the desired reference point.
Method 4: Align Handles Relative to the Active Point
To align handles to a specific reference handle or vertex:
- In the top toolbar, set the Transform Pivot Point to Active Element.
- Select the handles you wish to move, and select the reference handle last so it stays highlighted in white (making it the active element).
- Press S (Scale), choose your axis (X, Y, or Z), press 0, and press Enter.
All selected handles will instantly flatten to match the axis position of the active reference handle.
