How to Adjust Point Light Power and Radius in Blender

Adjusting the power and radius of a point light in Blender allows you to control the brightness of your scene and the softness of cast shadows. Both settings are located within the green Light Data Properties tab in the Properties editor. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on locating these settings and understanding how changes to power and radius impact both the EEVEE and Cycles render engines.

Step 1: Select the Point Light

Click on the point light directly in the 3D Viewport or select its name in the Outliner panel located in the top-right corner of the interface.

Step 2: Open Light Properties

Look at the Properties panel on the lower-right side of the screen. Click on the Object Data Properties icon, which resembles a green lightbulb.

Step 3: Adjust the Light Power

Under the Light section of the properties panel:

  • Locate the Power field (measured in Watts).
  • Click and drag the value left or right, or click directly into the box and type a specific numeric value.
  • Increasing the wattage increases the light's overall emission intensity and brightness, while decreasing it dims the light.

Step 4: Adjust the Light Radius

Directly beneath the Power setting, you will find the Radius parameter:

  • Click and drag the Radius slider or input a distance value (such as meters).
  • Radius set to 0: The light acts as an infinitesimal mathematical point, producing completely sharp, hard-edged shadows.
  • Increasing the Radius: Expanding the size creates softer, diffused shadow edges (penumbra) and enlarges the specular highlight reflection visible on glossy surfaces.

Additional Tips for EEVEE and Cycles

  • Cycles: Physically calculates ray tracing based on the radius, meaning larger radii naturally reduce noise and create realistic shadow falloff.
  • EEVEE: Requires shadows to be enabled under the light's Shadow sub-panel to display soft shadow falloff accurately based on the designated radius.
