How to Adjust Metaball Resolution in Blender
In Blender, metaball resolution controls the detail and smoothness of metaball objects in the 3D Viewport and final renders. These settings are located in the Object Data Properties panel and are split into separate controls for Viewport and Render quality. Lower numeric values create a higher-density, smoother mesh, while higher values lower the detail to increase performance.
Location of Metaball Resolution Settings
To adjust the resolution of a metaball:
- Select your metaball object in the 3D Viewport.
- Go to the Properties panel on the right side of the screen.
- Click on the Object Data Properties tab (represented by a green icon of two connected circles).
- Expand the Metaball dropdown section.
Viewport vs. Render Resolution
Blender provides two distinct resolution sliders for metaballs:
- View Resolution: Determines the detail level shown in the 3D Viewport while modeling and animating.
- Render Resolution: Determines the detail level generated when rendering the final image or animation.
How the Resolution Values Work
Metaball resolution in Blender uses a distance-based grid calculation, which means the value works inversely compared to standard subdivision settings:
- Smaller Values = Higher Resolution: Decreasing the
value (e.g., from
0.4to0.1) creates smaller grid cells, resulting in a denser, smoother, and higher-quality mesh. - Larger Values = Lower Resolution: Increasing the
value (e.g., from
0.2to0.8) creates larger grid cells, resulting in a blockier, lower-detail mesh.
Best Practices for Performance
- Keep the View Resolution relatively high (such as
0.2to0.5) while working to ensure your 3D Viewport remains responsive. - Lower the Render Resolution (such as
0.05to0.1) to ensure smooth curves in your final output. - Avoid setting either resolution value to extremely low numbers (like
0.001), as this generates millions of polygons instantly and can freeze or crash Blender.
