How to Add a Point Light in Blender
Adding lighting is an essential step in creating realistic or stylized 3D scenes in Blender. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step tutorial on how to insert a basic point light into your 3D viewport, reposition it, and customize its key properties such as brightness, color, and shadow radius to illuminate your models effectively.
Step 1: Open the Add Menu
- Position your 3D Cursor in the viewport where you want the light to
appear (left-click with the Cursor tool or
Shift + Right-Click). - Press
Shift + Aon your keyboard to open the Add menu. - Hover over the Light category.
- Click on Point.
A new Point Light object will immediately appear at the 3D Cursor's location.
Step 2: Position the Light
- Select the Point Light by left-clicking on it in the Viewport or the Outliner.
- Press
Gto activate the Grab tool, move your mouse to position the light, and left-click to set its location. - To restrict movement to a specific axis, press
Gfollowed byX,Y, orZ.
Step 3: Customize Light Settings
To change the light's intensity, color, and overall behavior:
- Select the Point Light.
- Go to the Properties Panel on the right side of the screen.
- Click on the Object Data Properties tab (represented by a green lightbulb icon).
From this panel, adjust the following core settings:
- Color: Click the color box to change the hue of the light emitted.
- Power: Increase the wattage value to make the light brighter (default is usually 10W; try 100W or higher depending on the scale of your scene).
- Radius: Adjusting the radius changes the softness
of the light's shadows. A radius of
0mproduces sharp shadows, while larger values produce softer shadows. - Max Bounces: Controls how many times the light bounces off surfaces in Raytracing renders (Cycles engine).
Step 4: Preview the Lighting
To accurately see how the point light illuminates your scene, switch the Viewport Display mode:
- Press
Zto open the View Shading pie menu. - Select Rendered (or click the rightmost sphere icon in the top-right corner of the 3D Viewport).
