How to Add a Crossfade Transition in Blender VSE
A crossfade transition is a fundamental video editing technique where one clip smoothly dissolves into another by gradually decreasing the opacity or volume of the first strip while increasing that of the second. This guide explains the purpose of crossfading and provides a clear, step-by-step walkthrough for applying both video and audio crossfade transitions in Blender’s Video Sequence Editor (VSE).
What Is a Crossfade Transition?
A crossfade—often referred to as a cross dissolve—bridges the gap between two sequential media clips. Instead of an abrupt cut, the outgoing clip fades out as the incoming clip fades in simultaneously. This creates a seamless visual or auditory blend, commonly used to indicate the passage of time, soften scene transitions, or smoothly shift between different camera angles and audio tracks.
How to Apply a Video Crossfade in Blender VSE
- Set Up the Timeline: Open Blender and switch to the Video Editing workspace.
- Overlap the Strips: Place your first (outgoing) clip on one channel (such as Channel 1) and your second (incoming) clip on a channel above it (such as Channel 2). Drag the clips so they overlap along the timeline by the number of frames you want the transition to last.
- Select the Strips: Select the first video strip,
then hold
Shiftand select the second video strip. - Add the Cross Effect: Press
Shift + A, navigate to Transition, and select Cross (or Gamma Cross for a transition that accounts for color space brightness). Alternatively, use the shortcutCtrl + Shift + Twith both strips selected. - Adjust Transition Length: Blender will generate a transition strip over the overlapping area. You can resize the overlapping handles of your source clips to shorten or lengthen the fade duration.
How to Apply an Audio Crossfade
- Position the Audio Tracks: Place two sound strips on separate audio channels and overlap them for the desired fade duration.
- Add Sound Crossfade: Select both audio strips using
Shift + Left-Click, pressShift + A, navigate to Transition, and select Sound Crossfade. - Customize Fade Curves: With the transition
selected, open the Sidebar by pressing
Nto fine-tune volume levels and adjust fade handles to control how quickly the audio blends.
