Extrude Individual vs Extrude Region in Blender
In Blender 3D modeling, extruding is the process of generating new geometry from existing vertices, edges, or faces. The main difference between Extrude Region and Extrude Individual lies in how multiple selected faces are treated during the extrusion process: Extrude Region merges selected faces into a single continuous mesh using their average direction, while Extrude Individual extrudes each selected face separately along its own unique normal vector.
What is Extrude Region?
Extrude Region is Blender’s default extrusion tool, activated by
pressing E in Edit Mode. When multiple adjacent faces are
selected, this tool joins them into a single, cohesive block of
geometry.
- Direction: Moves the selection along the average normal vector of all selected faces combined.
- Side Geometry: Creates shared side faces along the outer boundary of the selection while keeping the inner faces attached to one another.
- Best Used For: Extending connected structures like walls, character limbs, terrain steps, or unified mesh expansions.
What is Extrude Individual?
Extrude Individual is accessed by pressing Alt + E and
selecting Extrude Individual Faces. This option treats
every face in your current selection as an independent object.
- Direction: Moves each face along its own local Z-axis (its individual normal), independent of the surrounding faces.
- Side Geometry: Generates distinct side faces around every single selected face, separating adjacent faces from each other during the extrusion.
- Best Used For: Creating detailed surface patterns like armor plating, tiles, window panes, building facades, or spikes.
Key Differences
- Geometry Connection: Extrude Region keeps adjacent selected faces attached to form a single structure. Extrude Individual disconnects adjacent faces from one another, generating side walls for every face.
- Direction Calculation: Extrude Region averages the direction of all selected faces to determine movement. Extrude Individual calculates individual directions based solely on each face's specific orientation.
- Workflow Efficiency: Using Extrude Individual saves time by eliminating the need to select, inset, and extrude faces one by one when creating repetitive surface details across complex models.
