Change Active Object Without Dropping Selection in Blender
In Blender, managing multiple selected objects requires knowing the difference between selected objects and the single active object. This guide explains how to quickly switch which object is active among your current selection without deselecting the rest of your group.
Selected vs. Active Objects in Blender
- Selected Objects: Highlighted with a dark orange outline. These objects are affected by multi-object operations like moving, scaling, or rotating.
- Active Object: Highlighted with a bright yellow (or lighter orange) outline. This is the primary object that receives Edit Mode focus, material assignments, and modifier additions.
Only one object can be active at a time, even when hundreds of objects are selected.
How to Change the Active Object
Method 1: In the 3D Viewport
- Select your group of objects using your preferred selection method
(such as box select
Bor holdingShiftand clicking). - Identify the object you want to set as the new active object.
- Hold Shift and Left-Click directly on that object in the 3D Viewport.
The newly clicked object will immediately gain the bright yellow outline, becoming the active object, while all previously selected objects maintain their dark orange selection outlines.
Note: If you Shift + Left-Click the currently active object (yellow outline), it will be deselected from the group. Simply Shift + Left-Click it again to reselect it and make it active.
Method 2: In the Outliner
- Ensure your group of objects is selected in the 3D Viewport.
- Locate the object you want to make active inside the Outliner panel.
- Hold Ctrl and Left-Click the object icon or name in the Outliner list.
This updates the active object status to your clicked item without clearing the rest of your selected hierarchy.
