Blender Rigify: What It Is and How to Use It

The Rigify add-on is a built-in tool in Blender that automates the creation of complex, production-ready character rigs. This guide provides a clear overview of what Rigify is and walks you step-by-step through enabling the add-on, aligning a metarig, generating the final control rig, and binding it to your 3D model.

What is the Rigify Add-on?

Rigify is an open-source rigging framework bundled directly with Blender. Instead of requiring you to manually build complex bone hierarchies, inverse kinematics (IK) constraints, and user interface controls from scratch, Rigify uses a modular "metarig" system.

A metarig acts as a basic skeletal blueprint that outlines the character's proportions. Once aligned to your 3D model, Rigify processes this metarig to generate a complete, feature-rich animation rig. The generated rig includes:

  • IK/FK Switching: Seamlessly toggle between Inverse Kinematics and Forward Kinematics for limbs.
  • Custom Control Shapes: User-friendly widgets and visual shapes for easy selection and posing.
  • Deformation Separation: A distinct layer of deformation bones that ensures clean skinning and smooth export to game engines.
  • Modular Sub-rigs: Pre-configured components for spines, limbs, eyes, fingers, and facial features.

How to Use Rigify in Blender

Step 1: Enable the Add-on

Rigify is included with Blender by default, but it must be enabled before use:

  1. Go to Edit > Preferences.
  2. Select the Add-ons tab on the left.
  3. Search for Rigify in the search bar.
  4. Check the box next to Rigging: Rigify and close the Preferences window.

Step 2: Add a Metarig

  1. In the 3D Viewport, press Shift + A to open the Add menu.
  2. Navigate to Armature.
  3. Select an appropriate metarig preset, such as Human (Meta-Rig), Animals, or Basic Human.

Step 3: Align the Metarig to Your Mesh

  1. Select your 3D character mesh and press Alt + G to ensure it is centered at the world origin.
  2. Select the metarig, go to the Data Properties tab (green running person icon), open the Viewport Display panel, and check In Front so the bones are always visible through the mesh.
  3. Switch the metarig to Edit Mode (Tab).
  4. Enable X-Axis Symmetry in the top-right corner of the 3D Viewport to move both left and right joints simultaneously.
  5. Move and rotate the bones to match your character's anatomy. Ensure joints (like knees and elbows) have a slight natural bend in the direction they should flex to allow proper IK calculation.

Step 4: Generate the Final Rig

  1. Switch back to Object Mode with the metarig selected.
  2. Go to the Data Properties tab in the Properties editor.
  3. Scroll to the bottom to find the Rigify panel.
  4. Click the Generate Rig button.
  5. Rigify will create a new armature named rig. Hide or delete the original metarig to avoid confusion.

Step 5: Bind the Mesh to the Generated Rig

  1. In Object Mode, select your 3D character mesh first.
  2. Hold Shift and select the newly generated rig.
  3. Press Ctrl + P to open the Parent menu.
  4. Select With Automatic Weights.

Step 6: Pose and Animate

Select the rig and switch to Pose Mode (Ctrl + Tab). You can now select the custom control handles to pose your character. Press N to open the sidebar, where the Item or Rigify tab will display controls for IK/FK snapping, squash-and-stretch toggles, and individual bone layer visibility.
