Blender Asset Browser: How to Mark Assets
Blender's Asset Browser is a powerful built-in tool designed to help 3D artists organize, reuse, and manage assets such as objects, materials, poses, and collections across multiple projects. This guide covers what the Asset Browser is, its core benefits, and the exact steps required to mark any object as an asset in Blender.
What is the Asset Browser?
The Asset Browser is an editor window in Blender that serves as a
visual library for your reusable data-blocks. Instead of constantly
appending or linking items from old .blend files through
standard file directories, the Asset Browser lets you drag and drop
models, materials, node groups, and animations directly into your active
3D viewport.
Assets can be stored within the current project file or in a centralized library directory configured in Blender's User Preferences.
How to Mark an Object as an Asset
Marking an object as an asset is a straightforward process that takes just a few clicks:
- Select the Object: In your 3D Viewport or the Outliner, select the object you want to turn into an asset.
- Open the Context Menu: In the Outliner panel, locate the selected data-block and right-click on it.
- Mark as Asset: Select Mark as Asset from the context menu.
- Verify the Icon: Once marked, a distinct asset icon (resembling a stack of books or a tag) will appear next to the object's name in the Outliner.
Managing and Using Your New Asset
After marking an object as an asset, you can view and organize it by opening an Asset Browser editor window:
- Open the Asset Browser: Change any workspace editor to the Asset Browser type using the editor dropdown menu in the top-left corner of any area.
- Add Metadata: Select the asset within the Asset Browser and press N to open the sidebar. Here, you can assign catalogs (categories), add tags, write a description, and assign an author.
- Generate or Update Thumbnails: Blender automatically generates a preview thumbnail for your asset, but you can load a custom image or re-render the preview using the preview options in the metadata panel.
- Save the File: For the asset to be accessible in
other projects, save the
.blendfile into a directory that is defined as an Asset Library in Edit > Preferences > File Paths > Asset Libraries.
