Apply Materials and Modifiers to Grease Pencil in Blender
This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to apply materials and modifiers to Grease Pencil strokes in Blender. You will learn how to assign colors, fills, and textures using the materials system, as well as how to use non-destructive modifiers to dynamically alter your 2D animations and sketches.
How to Apply Materials to Grease Pencil Strokes
Unlike standard 3D meshes, Grease Pencil materials control both the outline (Stroke) and the inside (Fill) of your 2D drawings.
Step 1: Create or Select a Grease Pencil Object
- In the 3D Viewport, press
Shift + A. - Navigate to Grease Pencil and select Blank or Stroke.
- Switch to Draw Mode from the interaction mode dropdown menu in the top-left corner.
Step 2: Add a New Material
- With your Grease Pencil object selected, go to the Properties panel on the right side of the screen.
- Click on the Material Properties tab (represented by a red globe icon).
- Click the New button at the top to create a new material slot.
Step 3: Configure Stroke and Fill Settings
In the material settings below the slot list, you will see two primary panels: * Stroke: Check this box to style the outline of your drawing. You can choose between Solid color, Gradient, or Texture. Adjust the Base Color and opacity (Alpha) as desired. * Fill: Check this box if you want the closed areas of your strokes to be filled with color. Like the stroke, you can style this as a Solid color, Gradient, or Texture.
Step 4: Assign Materials to Strokes
- For new drawings: Select your desired material from the active material slot list before you begin drawing.
- For existing drawings: Switch to Edit Mode, select the specific strokes you want to change, select the target material from the list, and click the Assign button located below the material slots.
How to Apply Modifiers to Grease Pencil Strokes
Modifiers allow you to apply non-destructive effects to your Grease Pencil objects, such as adding wave effects, thickening lines, or creating arrays.
Step 1: Access the Modifier Panel
- Select your Grease Pencil object in Object Mode.
- Go to the Properties panel and click on the Modifier Properties tab (represented by a blue wrench icon).
Step 2: Add a Modifier
- Click the Add Modifier dropdown menu.
- Choose a modifier from the list. Common Grease Pencil modifiers
include:
- Noise: Adds a randomized jitter to the strokes, perfect for creating a hand-drawn, animated wiggle effect.
- Thickness: Dynamically increases or decreases the width of your strokes.
- Subdivide: Smooths out jagged strokes by adding more control points.
- Array: Duplicates the strokes multiple times along a specified offset.
- Tint: Colors the strokes dynamically using a uniform color or gradient, overriding the original material colors.
Step 3: Adjust and Customize
Once added, the modifier will appear as a card in the modifier stack. You can adjust the parameters (such as strength, scale, or influence) to customize the visual effect. Modifiers can be reordered in the stack by clicking and dragging them, which will change the order in which the effects are calculated.
